Scale Lane Bridge

Winner of an international competition for a new opening pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Hull. As well as improving connection between the historic city centre and its under-developed east bank, the swing bridge acts as a focus for riverside regeneration and creates a memorable new civic landmark. It has become a visitor destination in the city because it uniquely allows people the experience of riding on the bridge while it rotates: a world first.

“Scale Lane Bridge is architecture and engineering. Its aesthetic qualities are deeply rooted in what it means to dwell for a while on/over the river and look back to the city. It is at once sculptural and practical, heroic and intimate. Use it, be seen on it, strut on it! Enjoy it- it is a venue in its own right.”
