The Hub, Workington

Competition-winning design for a suspended inflatable canopy and sound/light installation to create a focal space and landmark for the town centre as part of a public realm arts programme.

Glowing translucent inflatable ‘cloud’ canopies are suspended from surrounding buildings to create a sheltered and memorable place at the centre of the new development.

An innovative 3-dimensional immersive sound installation, developed with sound designer/composer Martyn Ware, is concealed within the canopy and seats to create a tranquil ambient soundscape which subtly reinforces the sense of place and connection to the surroundings. The space, with its sound and light system, can also be taken over for community events.
