Mulberry House Nursing Home

Award-winning 48-bed nursing home for chronically sick elderly people with wide-ranging physical and mental impairments, on a constrained site in Blackheath Conservation Area.

Rooms are grouped into house-scaled clusters around gardens and courtyard, with generous bay windows for each room, naturally lit circulation areas and natural materials to create intimate domestic character. Each room is given a clear identity and privacy threshold.

“Designing to meet the needs of very frail elderly people requires great skill and sensitivity- qualities very clearly evident in this building. The Client and Operator were exacting in their requirements and the success of the project has been strongly endorsed by the DoH Inspectorate, who commended it as ‘exceptional’, and by the Civic Trust. It is a delightful building, serving particularly vulnerable people outstandingly well.”
